The weather has finally started warming up, altho we are only getting into the high 30's.  Our snow is still belly deep on the cows, but at least there are places where grass can be seen (few & far between yet). But of course where we have plowed, there is lots of mud.  The corrals are getting really sloppy.   Now with the snow settling, the fences are showing & they are a huge mess.  The cows still cannot leave the feed ground  except to follow the trail to the water tank.  The snow that has been plowed off of our road is deeper than I have seen it in the 23 years I've lived out here.  So far, we've been blowed in 3 times since Christmas & had to have the county plow us out.  I'll let the pictures tell the story.........

Winter 2009 - 2010

Christmas Day storm Our road after Christmas Blizzard Bobbie standing by the big bank on our road after Christmas Blizzard
Mid January Blizzard The ranch sign after January Blizzard Our road after January Blizzard
The fences in the county buried Hwy 261 sign about 5 miles south of ranch county road about 5 miles south of the ranch
Hwy 261 about 6 miles north of Wibaux Hwy 261 about 7 miles north of Wibaux Snow banks near hay stacks after the 3rd blizzard (about 90' long, 6' wide & 6' deep)

Since it has been so cold all winter, we hired a neighbor to feed the cows hay.  Bobbie is no longer able to run the loader tractor, so I would be having to do it before leaving for work.   I feed the cows cake by hand every morning, & do the barn chores.  Depending on what the weather does, I may have to hire someone to help me calve.  Time will tell......

We have had a rough month with Bobbie's illness.  He fell at home in the middle of the night & the next week had to be hospitalized with Pneumonia.  He was in the Sidney hospital for 3 1/2 days, & is now in the Wibaux Nursing Home in transition care.  Two days after being admitted he came down with the flu, which really knocked him on his butt.  I got it 2 days later & I know how sick I was, so can see why it took it's toll on him.  Bobbie was released from the nursing home on the 18th of February.  He is home when I am, then at adult day care when I have to be at work.   It really took it's tole on him.

We will start calving around the 15th, I'm guessing.  We are not due until the 26th, but Sterling is a short gestation bull, so will start early.  Our 3 that were born in January, are doing well & growing like bad weeds.  They eat pellets everyday with their mothers.  The two heifer calves are out of Timber & the black bull calf is out of Sterling.   They are nice babies.

Since the winter has been so brutal on me, there will have to be a lot of changes in the next year.  I have listed the home place for sale, but haven't decided where we'll go if it sells.  I'll worry about that when the time comes.  I just know it will be closer to my job.  I will be selling some more cows this fall & possibly looking for someone to winter them.  I really don't want to sell them, since I have some really powerful young herd bull prospects.  Only time will tell what the future will hold for Weyer Ranch Salers.

Check out our Bulls, none have been sold yet & they are a very nice set of bulls .   The disposition is super, as I haven't had any time to spend on them & they are quite gentle.  We only made Dickinson Bull Days, as the roads were horrible on the Breeders Show & the pickup quit the morning of GATE.  So the boys aren't as well traveled as they have been in the past.

If you get out to our area, please call or stop by.  We always love to "TALK" Salers.
